Digital Bros, the parent company of Assetto Corsa developer Kunos Simulazioni, released a financial report last Friday which had some interesting information buried within it. It contained confirmation of not one but two new games in the Assetto Corsa series, including a direct sequel which currently bears the name Assetto Corsa 2.
A follow up to Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competizione is a prospect which will be eagerly anticipated by many fans. The success of these two titles has been significant to say the least, with the games passing 100 million euros in combined sales earlier this year. Therefore, it is not especially surprising that Kunos would be looking to capitalise further by expanding the game franchise.
In terms of actual information about Assetto Corsa 2, the report didn’t contain a lot. What was revealed is the fact that Assetto Corsa 2 is in development, and that it is expected to be released in 2024. This is a fair way away, and things can change significantly over the three years between now and the intended date of released, so 2024 shouldn’t be taken as a date written in stone. However, Assetto Corsa 2 was not the only new game in the series which was revealed to be in development.
Assetto Corsa Mobile
That’s right, a mobile version of Assetto Corsa is also in the works. This is a rather more imminent arrival – in fact, the planned release date for the game is summer of this year. This isn’t the first we’ve heard about the mobile game, but it’s been a while since anything was mentioned. Now we at least have an approximate idea of when it will arrive.
On the face of it, an Assetto Corsa mobile game seems like an odd decision. As Digital Bros note in the very same page of their financial report, the primary selling point for Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competizione is their “extraordinary level of simulation quality”. Such true to life fidelity will be impossible to achieve on a mobile gaming platform, and as such it is hard to imagine exactly what Assetto Corsa Mobile will look like. That being said, mobile gaming has been developing rapidly over the last decade, and it’s possible that Kunos Simulazioni will be able to break new ground when it comes to sim racing on mobile.
